5 Ways I Nest, Rest & Slow-down In The Cold

Hi everyone and welcome to Soft Embers.
Even though it’s not official yet, winter is here. The days are short and the nights are long. The chill in the air is unmistakable and I am loving every bit of it. Funny enough, I hated witer all my life and used to wish there could be a winter with only snow and no bitter cold- ha! However, pregnancy has really changed my tune. I’m not sure what caused the shift but becoming pregnant made me despise the heat and love the cold. I am not mad at it.
I love to be warm and cocooned. I’m obsessed with thick sweaters and blankets and I am living for purchasing it all. Fashion aside, I truly love the slower pace that the colder months bring. This is the time to truly hibernate, nest, rest, slow-down and reset. In today’s post I am sharing some of the ways I choose to do so. Grab a cuppa, blanket and let’s get into it.

Reading: My favourite hobby. I read all year round; however, there is something quite special about reading while being wrapped a thick blanket, wearing fuzzy socks, christmas jazz playing and a fire going (in my case my 4K TV fireplace😊). This is one of my favourite things to do during the colder months. I try to read winter/christmas romance novels but I always gravitate back to psych thrillers. Currently reading a cute rom-com☕️

Walking/Pilates: I always wanted to try Pilates but never made an effort to try it until recently and I AM SOLD. Why didn’t anyone tell me how good it is. Don’t get me wrong it works you to the core quite literally but I loved how I felt afterwards. I know winter is all about staying indoors as much as possible but you should still have some type of movement. Between both my pregnancies I was on bedrest for 10 months and I’m now trying to get my body together. Walking is something I enjoy and even more so now that the weather is cooler. We only have one body and it’s in our best interest to take care of it.

Writing: I haven’t written in a hot minute and getting back to it is one of the things that’s helping me through my grief of losing our daughter. I have created a schedule for writing and posting for this publication and excited to see how it does. My hope is always that if it touches one person, I’ve done my job. I’m also trying to write with pen & paper more and cut down on the digital aspect. Personally, I feel like my hadwriting is slipping because we text + type sooo much. I’m even thinking of taking a cursive course or just practicing on my own.

Colouring: As a child I loved to colour and I think I love it more as an adult. I love the Coco Wyo and ViVi Tinta colouring books. It’s fun letting your inner child go wild on the pages and it’s a great way to help your mind relax.

Puzzles: This is another hobby I loved as a child and during my time as a Behaviour Therapist, I loved putting them together with my clients. So, I thought why not get myself one to start. I bought a 500 piece box and in hindsight I should’ve started a bit smaller but it’s all good😅

I hope you enjoyed my winter whisperings: hobbies edition. I’d love to know what you do to help you unwind during the colder months😊
Until next time stay warm & gentle🤍
